I’m interested in going on a walk with the Dublin Walking Club. What do I need to do?
New members are always welcome. Look at the list of our forthcoming walks and let us know what walks interest you, and we can tell you the meeting points and times. You can contact us using the short form on the Contact Us page.

Do I need to be a member to walk with the Dublin Walking Club?
New walkers are welcome to join us to sample a walk, but for insurance purposes we require that people join the club if they wish to regularly walk with us.

How do I become a member?
First you should join us to sample a walk and apply to the Secretary for membership by completing a Membership form and paying the annual membership fee.

What is the cost of membership?
Membership of the Dublin Walking Club is currently €30 per annum and is payable by February of each year.

What do I need to bring on a walk?
Clothing: All walkers must have hiking boots or strong walking shoes (for short walks only). Given Ireland’s changeable weather, walkers should bring rain gear with them.
Jeans and cotton type tracksuit bottoms must not be worn on a hike as they soak in water like a sponge becoming very heavy, difficult to move in and keep the wearer cold which is dangerous.
We recommend that walkers on our medium and long walks bring a fresh set of clothes to change into after the walk.

Food/drink: Please bring a packed lunch, including fruit/snacks, water, and possibly a hot drink and some emergency rations (e.g. chocolate).

Items which are also useful: (in addition to a compass and whistle), a basic medical kit, a head torch and battery, survival bag and a mobile phone (remember mobile-phone coverage on hills is unreliable).

In addition:

  • Please inform the walk leader if you suffer from a medical condition e.g. epilepsy or diabetes.
  • Carry some form of personal identification and the name of someone who can be contacted in the event of an accident, e.g. family members/ friends.
  • Inform the leader if you’re feeling tired and “can’t keep up” There is no problem; we all have off-days.

Each person is personally responsible for their own actions and involvement in any of the Club’s activities. All walkers should wear suitable walking gear and footwear and follow the instructions of walk leaders.

Who leads walks?
All our walks are led by an allocated experienced club member who is familiar with the route. Walkers are requested to follow the instructions of the Walk Leader when on the walk.

Can I bring my child or dog with me?
No. Children or pets are not allowed on walks.

How do I know what walks are being planned?
This website includes a brief summary of forthcoming walks. However, full details are available in ‘Footprints’, the Dublin Walking Club newsletter which is sent to club members every two months. ‘Footprints’ details forthcoming walks for the next two months, including their grading (these are outlined on Our Walks page), the walk leaders, the areas to be walked and the time and place of meeting points.
